Boxelder is a species of maple native to North America. Sometimes called Three-leaved Maple because it is the only North American maple with compound leaves. Boxelder is a fast-growing and fairly short-lived tree which has several trunks and can form impenetrable thickets. Although light, close-grained, and a soft wood, it is considered undesirable for most uses. Except for the burl wood which is highly prized for decorative pieces. The natural Boxelder burl of this pen has been stablized adding to it's beauty and lustor.
"King of the Hawaiian Woods." Koa is one of Hawaii's largest native trees. It also ranks among the oldest tree species in the state and unquestionably carries the highest value. Several Koa species grow wild on all of Hawaii's eight main islands and all are unique to the Islands. Koa is also grown as a plantation tree and is part of a land reclamation project designed to provide cover on areas that were damaged by grazing. The wood is medium to dark brown with dark grain, sometimes having wavy or curly golden reflections. The Curly Koa offered here is hand selected to have the tightest wavy grain on the market. The result is a pen with facets which glisten in the light with the slightest movement.
